Ruth Schickel came to Washington DC in 1994 from New York City, where she had worked with families and single adults at a welfare office homeless diversion unit. She began working at CCHFP in April 2005. Ruth knew of CCHFP through her friendship with facilities manager Josh Palmer and former executive director Lynn Shea, both of whom she met while working at Christ House.
After leaving Christ House, she worked at So Others Might Eat (SOME) for six years as the Program Coordinator of Shalom House, a 93-room housing program in Northeast Washington.
Ruth has a degree in Communications from Ithaca College, where she studied cinema production. She has also completed coursework in social work from Cornell University and Hunter College. Ruth became interested in working with homeless mentally ill adults through a friend who worked in the field and because she has a brother who has schizophrenia.
Since coming to Washington DC, Ruth also helped to establish a small restaurant and owned and operated a neighborhood grocery store in Capitol Hill to help train and employ formerly homeless adults. After spending nearly two years to become a licensed foster parent, she brought home her now-adopted daughter.
