Last night Community Council for the Homeless at Friendship Place and Friendship Place Partners held a successful Ward 3 Council Candidate Forum at Metropolitan Memorial United Methodist Church. More than 200 audience members heard nine candidates give their views on issues affecting our homeless neighbors.
CCH/FP Executive Director Jean-Michel Giraud and Friendship Place Partners Chair June Kress presented an overview of the homeless situation and the work of CCH/FP and our partners. During the following 2 hours, the candidates fielded questions from a panel of experts consisting of Patty Mullahy Fugere (Executive Director for Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless), Andrew Aning (Formerly homeless and current Board Member of CCH/FP), and David Hammond (Writer & Associate Editor, Street Sense) followed by audience questions presented by moderator Harry Jaffe (National editor, The Washingtonian ).
Among the issues discussed by the candidates were health, mental health care, shelter and affordable housing, income support, job training, and criminal justice – all issues that will require attention by the candidate who wins the Ward 3 Council seat. The challenges of eliminating homelessness are many, and CCH/FP looks forward to working with the next Ward 3 Council member on these issues.
