Why Walk?

Alice Deal Junior High School students learn about homlessness before their mini-walk in 2006.It’s fun! You get to meet our friendly CCHFP staff, board, consumers, and family of neighborhood supporters.

  • At the mini-walk, you’ll see St. Columba’s water ministry and the Haven shelter.
  • At the Walkathon, you’ll meet over 30,000 walkers from DC, MD, and VA.

You get a Help the Homeless t-shirt.

Best of all, you’ll be helping our homeless neighbors rebuild their lives.

Where does my registration fee go?

CCHFP receives 100% of your registration fee.

  • A Youth registration ($15) can provide breakfast and a bus token for each of the 5 women at the Haven.
  • An Adult registration ($25) can provide prescription medicine for a consumer.
  • An Adult event-day registration ($30) can provide a pair of sturdy shoes for a consumer.

What about the t-shirt?

  • Fannie Mae provides the t-shirts free of charge to each registered walker.

Why is registration free for DC public schools and public charter schools?

  • Fannie Mae pays the $15 fee for each walker at those schools.  CCHFP will still receive funding for each walk, and it literally costs students nothing to turn in the signed registration.

Will it be the same if I give $15 to CCHFP instead of participating in the Walkathon?

  • Donations to CCHFP are always appreciated.
  • However, we get a significant bonus from Fannie Mae if we have lots of walkers.
  • If you’d like to participate but can’t walk, you can pay the registration fee for a child, senior, or consumer who wants to walk but is unable to pay.  Donate here.

How much does CCHFP receive from Help the Homeless?

  • Over 12% of our annual budget comes from Help the Homeless.  It is our most important fundraiser.
  • Most of the money received is bonus money for the number of walkers and youth reached through mini-walks and presentations.
