“Café at the Haven” is a new name, but the program is basically the same as Breakfast at the Haven. What's the difference? We now have some afternoon programs too. It is a free, informal, one-hour gathering to give members of our upper-Northwest Washington, D.C., community an opportunity to learn about our homeless neighbors:
- Why are they homeless? What are some of the causes of homelessness — mental illness? substance abuse? economic hardship?
- Are homeless people dangerous?
- How do people survive on the streets: how do they find food? or a place to sleep?
- Where are the families of the people who are homeless? Won't -- or, can't -- the families provide adequate care? And why?

Come and meet us over muffins, coffee and tea at our transitional shelter for women. one or two of our staff and board members tell the story of CCHFP - how concerned individuals, congregations and businesses came together in 1991 to make a difference in the lives of our homeless neighbors. We describe the broad range of services, from street outreach to permanent housing, that CCHFP offers. We give you a tour of the residence (at that time of day, the residents are out at special day programs: counseling or vocational training, for example).
And most important, we give you the opportunity to bring us your questions, whether about
homelessness generally or about a specific homeless person or issue
of concern to you.
Café at the Haven is not
a fundraising event. There is no charge to attend.
Cafés are part of an ongoing CCHFP community education program. We usually hold one a month.
