Help the Homeless Mini-walks will be taking place this fall.  Your school, congregation, youth group, or scout group can hold a mini-walk of its own!  It's very easy:

  • Contact Julie at Friendship Place at 202-364-1419.  We'll provide registration forms, fliers, and posters
  • Pick a date for your mini-walk September 1 - November 13, 2009
  • Encourage all your friends to turn in registration forms and fees $15 for youths, $25 for adults
  • We'll give a presentation on homelessness, often featuring a consumer guest speaker, and get you pumped up for the mini-walk
  • Take a walk around your neighborhood and let everyone know that you care about homelessness

The Friendship Place mini-walk will be Wednesday, October 14 at 5pm.  Everyone is welcome to join us!

All registered walkers get a Help the Homeless t-shirt and the knowledge that they helped make a difference in someone’s life just by walking!

Below, David Harris shares his experience of being homeless with fifth graders at Powell School.

The 21st Annual Help the Homeless Walkathon will be Saturday, November 21, 2009 on the National Mall.  Sign up will be available online and by paper registration this fall.  We had over 200 walkers in 2008-- please join Friendship Place for this year's Walkathon!

FAQs

How do you know someone you see on the street is homeless?
You don’t, really. Sometimes you can assume people are homeless when they are pushing a cart with all their belongings, sleeping in doorways or on benches, or begging with a sign that says “I’m homeless.”  But sometimes a homeless person looks just like anyone else walking down the street.
